Balearic villas are built around light and stone, and both are unforgiving. Pale plaster, wide openings and long sightlines make almost any framed print look like a placeholder. The wall is not asking for decoration. It is asking for something that can hold its own from eight metres away.

In a villa the usual rules of thumb fail, because the viewing distance is longer than in an apartment. A canvas that would dominate a city flat reads as modest across an open-plan living room. Light, humidity and the sea

Never hang a canvas where direct summer sun reaches it, even for an hour a day.
Aim for stable relative humidity, roughly 45 to 55 per cent. Coastal houses that stand empty for months are the difficult case, not the occupied ones.
Air conditioning outlets should not blow across a canvas.
Light the work with neutral-white, high colour rendering spots at around 30 degrees, not with warm light below 2700 Kelvin.

Insurance and documentation

Standard household cover usually caps art at a modest value, and holiday-home policies often cap it lower still. Above that threshold a work is declared separately, and the insurer will ask for exactly what a proper purchase already includes: a hand-signed certificate of authenticity with catalogue number, provenance and a high-resolution reference photograph.
